oh and also finally

On that trip back from Siena, we passed through the town of Bolsena, on the shores of Lake Bolsena. The Etruscans called Orvieto Volsinii, and then in 264 BC, the Etruscans having helped the Romans put down an uprising of the lessers, the Romans decided enough! - the place was too dangerous in anyone else's hands on the main route north and (as reported in discussion of Orvieto) moved the Orvieto Etruscan population away.

They ruthlessly moved the people to lovely fertile (but defenceless) land by the lake, calling it Volsinii Novi, from which the modern 'Bolsena' - now complete, of course, with castle...
